Nominee’s bio (and/or LinkedIn profile)
Jian Li is based in Seoul, South Korea, currently working as a manager at SK Telecom (SKT). Jian received his Ph.D from POSTECH in 2016. His research is in the area of Software-Defined Networks (SDN), mainly focused on control plane and overlay network management. Jian started his career at ON.Lab through his internship in November 2015. After finishing his internship, he started working as an open source developer for ON.Lab/ONF during 2016 - 2017, and the same period he worked as a Post-doctoral researcher and research assistant professor at POSTECH. Jian is currently serving as a chair of ONOS/CORD Working Group under SDN/NFV forum Korea. 

How long have been working in the ONOS community?
Jian has been working in the Ambassador program since Q1 2016. He was elected as an A-team member in 2016 ~ 2019. Jian has also worked as an open source developer at ON.Lab since 2015. After joining SKT, Jian continues to contribute code on overlay networking to the ONOS community.

What contributions have you made in the past to the ONOS community?
== R&D Role ==
Jian is an active code contributor, and he has ranked as top 4 in terms of the number of commits. In the past 5 years, Jian has made over 900+ commits, and upstreamed over 300k lines of code to the ONOS repository. Following are the areas that Jian has contributed to ONOS. 

  • Control Plane Manager (CPMan)
  • Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP) mapping system (SBI)
  • OVSDB provider, protocols (SBI)
  • gRPC and REST northbound interface (NBI)
  • OpenStack Networking (part of SONA project)
  • Kubernetes Networking (part of SONA project)
  • Network Acceleration (DPDK support)

== Ambassador Role ==
Beside the technical contributions, Jian also made contributions on promoting ONOS projects as an Ambassador. By being part of A-Team, Jian helped A-Team to draft the governance model of the Ambassador program. As an Ambassador mentor, Jian regularly holds the conference call/meeting with his mentees, guiding them to perform a set of activities like holding events and promoting ONOS/CORD projects locally. Jian has organized a set of ONOS/CORD events during 2016 - 2019. Being a chair of ONOS/CORD Working Group Korea and also an Ambassador, Jian organized 22 ONOS/CORD Developer’s Meetups in the past three years with the help of Korean Ambassadors. Moreover, as a part of A-Team, Jian helped ONF to organize ONOS Build 2017. As an ambassador, Jian also gave several ONOS/CORD related talks in conferences and workshops (e.g., SDNFV conference, ONK, KNOM, APNOMS, Openstack Day Korea, Open Infra Days Korea, SOSCON, ONOS Build, KSC, KREONET Workshop, etc.).

What are you actively working on in ONOS?
My current focus is on developing the overlay networking stack targeted for MEC use cases. Recent trends in MEC’s VIM is to adopt a lightweight platform to spawn both containers and virtual machines, and KubeVirt is designed for this purpose. Unfortunately, there are few networking stacks that support KubeVirt, and I will be using ONOS to implement the entire KubeVirt networking stack.

Why do you feel you would be a good candidate for this position?
I feel that I can be a good candidate, because I have been working on various areas around ONOS in the past 5 years. I also have a good understanding of ONOS code base across various layers (SBI, NBI, app etc.). I also successfully commercialized SONA along with ONOS at SKT in 2018, and by leveraging this experience, I can improve ONOS in terms of reliability and stability.

Are there any changes you would like to bring to the community if elected into this position?
By far, the communities were mostly focused on revolutionizing the underlay network through trellis and SEBA projects. Since the overlay network has become more and more important recently, by aligning with the trend, I would like to make contributions in this direction. By far, I have contributed OpenStack networking and Kubernetes networking to the community, and as the next milestone I plan to contribute KubeVirt tailored networking solution.
